On the move II – ‘Outside the box’

On the move is a project I started in London and ‘Outside the box’ is a new series of work made in Shanghai, using the same white blocks to create site-specific interventions, highlighting the gaps and spaces that are generally overlooked in our everyday surroundings.

In ‘Outside the Box’, the white space in the work is as important as each photograph itself. According to an interpretations of one of Laozi’s sayings, he said ‘doors and windows are cut out in order to make a house; the utility of the house depends on the empty spaces’. It is not about grandeur but the little things in life that make it magical.

It’s brilliant when things come together..

light boxSometimes in China, things can be a bit rough and ready. This time, I was very lucky to find an electrician who seek perfection in the work. The way he glued the light socket onto the acrylic box was brilliant, he was using a syringe to help direct the flow of the glue… no mess, just perfect!! An ingenious idea…

I love it when I’m learning something new everyday!

My first light box and many more to come…

Made in China – Thames Town 泰晤士小镇

Among the many places I have visited to date, I think Thames Town probably left one of the more lasting impressions and subconsciously I think it has informed a lot of my recent work.

Imagined a small quiet town in the UK artificially created 20miles outside Shanghai, a city that is normally filled with noise and people. Here in Thames Town, apart from the wedding couples taking photos, the whole town is just a ghost town. It was almost impossible to find a place for lunch. All the shop houses were just empty shells, the architecture looked just like the old Tudor houses/ Victorian houses in the UK. However, there was no life in the area.. a very strange place.

A silly phrase came to mind and have been playing over and over again in my head..

真是真 假是假
说假是假 说真是真
真真假假 只在心中
