On the move is a project I started in London and ‘Outside the box’ is a new series of work made in Shanghai, using the same white blocks to create site-specific interventions, highlighting the gaps and spaces that are generally overlooked in our everyday surroundings.
In ‘Outside the Box’, the white space in the work is as important as each photograph itself. According to an interpretations of one of Laozi’s sayings, he said ‘doors and windows are cut out in order to make a house; the utility of the house depends on the empty spaces’. It is not about grandeur but the little things in life that make it magical.

Sometimes in China, things can be a bit rough and ready. This time, I was very lucky to find an electrician who seek perfection in the work. The way he glued the light socket onto the acrylic box was brilliant, he was using a syringe to help direct the flow of the glue… no mess, just perfect!! An ingenious idea…
I love it when I’m learning something new everyday!

I am fascinated by the dynamic changes that are currently happening in Shanghai and in particular how these changes impact the daily life of the Shanghai residents. Through the different facets of the everyday life, I am exploring the following:
- People on the move
- The relationship between personal and public spaces
- The changing architecture
- The overlooked aspect of the everyday life
